“The value of gathering a variety of DLC stakeholders in one place to engage in constructive and candid dialog can’t be overstated.” – Dan Mellinger, Efficiency Vermont

The first DesignLights Consortium® (DLC)  Stakeholder Meeting in Atlanta, GA was a huge success and brought together professionals from all over the lighting industry. Through informal, educational sessions, context panels, break-out sessions, and structured networking, DLC was able to and make new connections and offer unique perspectives and opportunities to build mutual understanding among all stakeholders.

Each panel provided valuable information and allowed for audience engagement, so that DLC was able to listen to and learn from industry professionals and their experiences with the program as well as the solid state lighting industry as a whole. Furthermore, the meeting provided a platform for discussions and interactions among representatives of energy efficiency programs, luminaire manufacturers, testing laboratories, lighting designers, and many more.

Looking ahead, the DLC is excited to know that efforts to encourage collaboration are valued among DLC stakeholders and the program has recognized its role in bringing the SSL industry together to allow for more discussion overall. In the future, DLC plans to continue to improve its specification development process to be more nimble and responsive to DLC members’ needs while at the same time building on the industry input process to make it more inclusive and transparent. Additionally, DLC will carry forward collaborations with the Department of Energy and other advisers to be able to spread the word about energy efficient solid state lighting in an effort to further engage lighting designers and other stakeholders. Other hot topics that came out of discussions at the meeting include laboratory accreditation, safety certification, and advanced lighting controls – all important issues in furthering energy efficient SSL.

We got great feedback from the SSL industry leaders at the meeting who are all  looking forward to the new DLC website and user-friendly Qualified Products List (QPL) database that is expected to launch in early 2013!  More to come about this over the coming months.
